Yury Achkasov decided to study economics because he loved mathematics in school and wanted to apply that discipline to the fullest extent possible. In this interview with Age-Mates, he spoke about his inspiring work at the Central Bank, the animal spirits of market traders, and what would convince him to stop going to the office altogether.

HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov joined the university in July 2021. In an exclusive interview to RBC he spoke about the important events that have happened at HSE University since then, whether it was necessary to quit the Bologna system, and how to attract international students to Russian universities. On September 8th, 2022, HSE University signed a cooperation agreement with the Sberbank Charitable Foundation ‘Investment to the Future’ as part of the Moscow Financial Forum. The agreement was signed by Nikolay Berzon, Director of the Federal Methodology Centre for Financial Literacy in Primary and Secondary Education, and Pyotr Polozhevets, Executive Director of the Foundation.

Between August 23rd and 25th, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science held its annual summer school on machine learning in bioinformatics. After two years of being held online, the school returned to an offline format for this year. Over three days, more than 120 participants attended lectures and seminars by leading experts in the field from institutions such as HSE University, Skoltech, AIRI, MSU, MIPT, Genotek, and Sber Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

A team of researchers from HSE MIEM, LPI RAS, and the University of Southern California have applied machine learning to the analysis of internal defects in perovskite solar cells and proposed ways to improve their energy efficiency. The findings of the study performed on the Cs₂AgBiBr₆ double perovskite can be used to develop more efficient and durable perovskite-based materials. The paper has been published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters.

At the end of August, the Centre for Internships, Projects and Entrepreneurship of the Faculty of Computer Science, with support from the HSE University Business Incubator, held the first summer school on entrepreneurship. More than 40 HSE University bachelor’s and master’s students participated in it. The school was aimed at developing the students’ entrepreneurial skills and introducing them to the art of presenting ideas and products.

Researchers of the HSE University and the Southern Federal University (SFedU) have tested a new method for studying the perception of facial emotional expressions. They suggest that asking subjects to recognise emotional expressions from dynamic video clips rather than static photographs can improve the accuracy of findings, eg in psychiatric and neurological studies. The paper is published in Applied Sciences.

One million people in Russia suffer from venous diseases. The ‘Intelligent data analysis for healthcare information systems’ Mirror Lab project brings together expertise in mathematics and medicine in order to better diagnose various conditions in phlebology.
