On August 4, 2023, a pre-defence of the thesis on ‘Refugee-Host Community Conflict over Assimilation, Integration, and State Legitimacy: The Case of Rohingyas in Bangladesh’ by Md. Reza Habib will be held at HSE University. The preliminary defence will take place at a joint meeting of the HSE School of Sociology and the International Laboratory for Social Integration Research. What are the modern trends in economic education and how are they incorporated in HSE programmes? Why do economists need machine learning and artificial intelligence? In mid-July, HSE Art and Design School hosted the graduate fashion show for the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in the Fashion Design and Fashion Brand Creation pathways. Guests saw 20 collections from young designers, with each of them reflecting on an exciting topic, while creating unusual images from a variety of materials.
Scientists from HSE University in Perm Receive First Artificial Intelligence Patent
Aleksey Kychkin, a researcher at the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Empirical Studies (LINES), and Oleg Gorshkov, a research assistant at LINES, received a patent for a system that predicts the spatial distribution of harmful substances in atmospheric air using an artificial intelligence unit. The invention can be used for integrated planning and notification of the risks of atmospheric air pollution by harmful substances. The work was carried out under a grant from the HSE University Artificial Intelligence Centre. The HSE News Service spoke with Aleksey Kychkin about the benefits of the new system, its application, and how it came to life.
HSE Faculty of Computer Science Holds Summer School on Software Engineering
At the beginning of July, a summer school on software engineering was held at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. This is the successor to the school on mobile applications development, which was held at the FCS from 2015 to 2022. The school’s partners for this event included 1C, Sber, the community of authors of the Indicator games, and the Samsung Innovation Campus IT School.
Role of Street Art in Urban Environment Discussed at HSE CREATIVE HUB
On July 22, the HSE CREATIVE HUB space hosted the ‘AGREED’ street art festival. This is the first collaboration between HSE Art and Design School students and the CHAIN community. The event participants learned how street art changes the urban environment and also created their own artifacts in the form of special stickers and stencils.

The Bachelor’s in Information Science and Computation Technology (ISCT) at HSE MIEM trains experts in the study and design of advanced computing devices, systems, and networks. Graduates of the programme are sought-after specialists in the fields of software development, computer production and sales, computing department management and more. The programme attracts students from across Russia and further afield. ‘This Summer School Made Me Realise How Important Data Analytics Actually Is Nowadays’
From July 4–8, the 14th Summer School ‘Methods and Tools for Analysing Social Networks’ was held by the International Laboratory for Applied Network Research (ANR Lab). The dissemination of knowledge about the most recent methods of network analysis is one of the goals of the laboratory. Social network analysis is an interdisciplinary field that studies networks of interactions between different objects (such as people, organisations, institutions, countries, words in texts, texts on the internet) and identifying hidden patterns within them.
