Wenrui Zhang, from China, is a recent graduate of theMaster’s in Economics and Economic Policy at the HSE UniversityFaculty of Economic Sciences. Having successfully defended his master’s thesis on the impact of COVID-19 on the incomes of vulnerable groups, Wenrui has set his sights on publishing his research and enrolling in adoctoral programme at the university. The HSE News Service interviewed Wenrui about his achievements so far and his goals for the future, and also spoke to Prof.Elena Kotyrlo, his academic supervisor.

Student of HSE Lyceum Wins Bronze at European Geography Olympiad

The 8th European Geography Olympiad took place in Serbia at the end of June. The results of the competition were announced individually in two age categories: the senior group (16–19 years old) and the junior group (12–15). The Russian team won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. One of the bronze medal winners was Danila Gavrilov, student of the HSE Lyceum.

Patrons' Brain Activity while Viewing Menu Items Can Predict Restaurant Sales

A positive correlation has been discovered between the neural activity in the nucleus accumbens of study participants as they were presented with photographs of dishes from the menu of the Chaihona No. 1 restaurant chain and the sales performance of said dishes in the chain's establishments. This finding was made by a team of researchers of the HSE Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). The study findings have been published in PLoS One.

Students from Leading Universities Take Part in Hackathon Organised by MTS and HSE University

At the end of June, HSE University hosted Reklamathon, an inter-university hackathon in which participants must develop a prototype product for forecasting the effectiveness of advertising campaigns on social media. The event was organised by HSE University’s Data-Driven Communication master’s programme, which trains communications industry specialists. The hackathon’s assignments and judges were arranged by MTS, Russia’s largest digital ecosystem.
