HSE Creates Centre for South Arabian Studies
The new centre will operate as part of the Institute of Oriental and Classical Studies (IOCS) at the HSE Faculty of Humanities, and its flagship project will focus on the study of the language and oral folklore of Socotra Island. The centre is a trilateral international partnership between HSE University, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a consortium of leading universities in the UAE. 'Unconventional Thinking Can Be Cultivated through Competitions Like Physics Tournaments'
Last week, university students from all over the country came to HSE University for the All-Russian Student's Tournament of Physicists. The tournament took the form of battles in which teams tackled physics problems while taking turns in the roles of speakers, opponents, and reviewers. Based on the competition results, the combined team 'Volume Dependence' emerged as the winner and will participate in the upcoming international tournament in Zurich.
Tea Ceremony, Naruto and Norigae: HSE Celebrates Year of the Green Wood Dragon
On the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice, the HSE Cultural Centre welcomed admirers of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures. HSE students, teachers, and guests celebrated the Lunar New Year with South Korean hit songs and popular anime openings. They attended calligraphy and origami classes, tried regional sweets, and had Far Eastern teas. The festival ended with a big concert.
‘Today’s Communication Goes beyond the Classical Application of Digital Tools’
HSE University has launched a Bachelor's Programme in Global Digital Communications. This new online programme from the School of Communication gives students meta-skills, teaches them to communicate with artificial intelligence and set tasks for it, develops critical thinking, and inspires teamwork in launching creative projects. Graduates of this course will be able to conduct analytical research using Python and SQL, as well as strategically approaching global communication tasks.
Early Molecular Diagnosis of Cancer Proven More Cost-Effective Than Subsequent Treatment of Advanced Disease
Applying expensive diagnostic methods in clinical practice will ultimately cost society 5 to 10 times less than the expenditures associated with late-stage cancer treatment, including subsequent disability pensions and sick leave payments—these are the findings from a study conducted by researchers at the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences Marina Kolosnitsyna and Anastasia Vladimirskaya in collaboration with colleagues at EVOGEN, a medical genetic laboratory, and the Department of Health of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The study results have been published in Social Aspects of Population Health.
Russian Scientists Develop AI Algorithm for Faster Prediction of Earthquakes and Disease Outbreaks
Researchers at the HSE University AI Research Centre and Faculty of Computer Science have proposed a novel algorithm for detecting structural changes in time series. The method uses a neural network to compare various segments of a series, enabling rapid detection of changes in its behaviour. The results of their work have been presented at the 26th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics— AISTATS (A*).

Ndubuisi Johnbosco Ezenwa, 28, is a recent graduate of the Master’s in Strategic Corporate Finance at the HSE University Faculty of Economic Sciences. In 2023, he won first place in the Finance category of the Student Research Paper Competition (SRPS) for his paper ‘Impact of the Target Firm's ESG Rating on the Bid Premium Paid in M&A Transactions.’ Although he returned to Nigeria in July 2023, Ndubuisi still has plenty to share about his time at HSE University in Moscow. Employees and Students of HSE University to Participate in the Games of the Future
A student team from the university will compete in phygital basketball, while faculty members will unveil their research on the current landscape of student esports to the expert community. The Games of the Future's opening ceremony will take place in Kazan on February 21, with the events running until March 3.

Until March 15, the exhibition ‘Winnie-the-Pooh and All, All, All’ will be held in the Children's and Youth Department of the Central City Youth Library named after M.A. Svetlov. Graduates of the continuing education programme ‘Illustration. Basic Course’ decided to take a fresh look at A. A. Milne's beloved fairy tale by drawing incredibly colourful posters.
