HSE University Alumna Develops Technology to Repair Karst Sinkholes
This year, the first cohort of the international master’s programme ‘Prototyping Future Cities’ earned their degrees. Among those graduating with honors was architect Anna Budnikova, who invented a unique technology to reinforce karst sinkholes with fungal spores.
‘Green’ Taxes: An Analysis of Climate Policy Effectiveness
It is believed that carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere are mainly regulated by ‘direct’ economic instruments - the carbon tax and the Emissions Trading System (ETS). However, a comparative analysis has shown that ‘indirect’ instruments, such as excise taxes on motor fuel and other energy taxes, did not yield any lesser impact than their ‘direct’ counterparts, and, over time, were even more effective.

On July 25, upon the approval of the Moscow City Construction Supervision and the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow, HSE University’s new Pokrovka complex opened its doors. The complex, located at 11 Pokrovsky Boulevard, is HSE’s largest and most modern Moscow campus. Classes will begin there in September.
First Cohort Graduates from Master’s Programme in Statistical Learning Theory
The Master's Programme in Statistical Learning Theory was launched in 2017. It is run jointly with the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech). The programme trains future scientists to effectively carry out fundamental research and work on new challenging problems in statistical learning theory, one of the most promising fields of science. Winners of the II International Economics Olympiad Announced in St. Petersburg
On July 31, the II International Economics Olympiad (IEO) for high school students came to a close in Saint Petersburg. In the team competition, the Brazilian team won the gold medal, while teams from China won silver and bronze. One of Russian teams placed fifth.

Five Master’s Programmes for Future Researchers
HSE offers a wide range of master’s programmes for all tastes. There are currently 31 programmes taught entirely in English. Some, such as ‘Financial Analyst’ or Prototyping Future Cities, are more practice-oriented; others pave the way for careers in academia. International students can apply online until August 20.
