In December 2019, the awards ceremony for the Taiwan International Student Design Competition, one of the world’s biggest student design contests, took place in Taiwan. Anna Degoeva, fourth-year student of Communication Design at HSE University who participated in the competition, took third place.
A Disadvantaged Start: How Childhood Poverty Affects Self-confidence in Adulthood
In 2017, 30% of Russian families with children under three and almost 20% of families with children under 18 were living below the poverty line. Incidentally, financial hardships experienced during childhood do not leave one unaffected. A study by an HSE psychologist shows that poverty experienced in childhood reduces self-esteem and self-assurance even in adults who later achieve financial success.
HSE Lyceum Student Wins Bronze at International Competition in Kazakhstan
On January 8-14, the city of Almaty hosted the International Zhautykovsky Olympiad (IZO) in mathematics, physics, and computer science. In the computer science competition, HSE Lyceum 11th grader Alexander Potapov won a bronze medal. 84 teams from 21 countries including Norway, Romania, the UAE, and Nepal participated in the Olympiad.
Shedding Light on Mysteries of the Past
Michele Minardi, from Italy, holds a PhD in Archaeology from Sydney University and has spent a number of years in investigating Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan. He has recently joined the team of Centre of Classical and Oriental Archaeology of the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies as a Research Fellow. Emotions Help Engage School Students in Learning
Psychology researchers from HSE University have trialed the reliability of a student engagement scale on 537 Russian primary school students. The findings indicated that the emotional component contributes the most to school engagement. The paper has been published in PLOS ONE journal.

HSE Researchers Talk with High Schoolers about What IT Will Be Like in 10 Years
How do scientists steer satellites and remotely probe our planet’s surface? Researchers from HSE and other universities discussed questions such as this with students from 36 participating Moscow high schools as part of the city government’s Moscow School IT-Classes project. Eight educational partners, including HSE and Bauman Moscow State Technical University, are participating in the project, which aims to familiarize students with careers in IT.
HSE Art and Design School Opens Experimental Music Library
The HSE Art and Design School has opened a unique audio library. Initiated by Evgeny Voronovsky, composer, independent sound producer and lecturer at the Art and Design School, the library holds rare samples of experimental sound art, noise music, and underground music. HSE Remains Leader in Russia by Number of Economics Research Papers
At the close of 2019, HSE University once again ranked first among Russian organizations in the RePEc/IDEAS (Research Papers in Economics) world ranking and advanced to a record-breaking 129th place. The ranking evaluates economic, academic, and research institutions based on their publication activity in economics.
