Ten Facts about HSE's International Community
Every year, the HSE family welcomes representatives of new countries and becomes more interesting and diverse. On June 4, 2017, international students will talk to visitors about their home countries and introduce them to their cultures at The Whole World at HSE festival. To give you a quick pre-festival snapshot of how international HSE is, we’ve brought together ten facts about the university international life for you.
How International Students Can Apply to HSE
HSE has recently published information on discounts for international students applying in 2017. Tatiana Chetvernina, HSE’s Director of International Admissions, talked to our News Service about this and various other innovations concerning international students at the University.
Learning Democracy and Exploring Russia
On May 10 – 19 students of HSE- Nizhny Novgorod and University of Utah Valley (USA) took part at the international school 'Democracy in the Contemporary World' held at Higher School of Economics – Nizhny Novgorod within the Master's Programme on Political Linguistics.
Summer University: A Gateway to HSE and Russia
In 2014 HSE launched its first Summer University aimed at international students – since then the number of participants and courses as well as their diversity grew greatly. The Summer University opens its doors to the world on June 20, 2017, and Oksana Chernenko, Director of the Summer University programme, and Anna Mezentseva, manager of the Summer University programme, talked to The HSE Look about the programme and how it helps to promote HSE and Russia as study destinations globally.
A Myanmar Student’s Life in Moscow
Wai Yan Phyo Naing from Yangon, Myanmar is a student of HSE Master’s programme in Socioeconomic and Political Development of Modern Asia of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs. He has told HSE News Service about the similarities and differences between his home city and Moscow.

International Students to Receive Tuition Fee Discounts at HSE
International students enrolled in fee-paying places of HSE Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in 2017 are eligible for tuition fee discounts. Moreover, discounts will be offered to participants of HSE student competitions and graduates of HSE Pre-University programmes, as well as those potential students who have graduated from the University’s partner schools.
International Olympiad Competitions for Master’s Programmes Held by HSE
In March and April, an HSE Olympiad competition for students and graduates took place in Russia and other countries, including the USA, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Vietnam. About 9,500 people registered for the competition, an increase of 25% over last year. One-third of all participants were HSE students and graduates. The winners of the Olympiad will be at an advantage when applying for HSE’s Master’s programmes corresponding to the competitions they participated in.
International Students Can Apply for Fee-paying Slots at HSE until August
April 1st, 2017 was the deadline for international students claiming state-financed slots on master’s programmes funded by scholarships from the Russian Government. The application period for undergraduate programmes lasts until May 2, and for fee-paying slots in undergraduate and master’s programmes – until mid-August. Some of the prospective students will have the opportunity to get a tuition fee discount.
‘Learn Russian – It’s Worth It’
Marek Soukup from Masaryk University in Brno, the Czech Republic, is currently studying at HSE St Petersburg as an exchange student on the Applied Economics and Mathematical Methods MA programme. His decision to come to Russia stemmed from his desire to perfect his knowledge of the Russian language, which he started learning four years ago.
