HSE to Provide Platform for Discussion of Civil Society Influence Strategies in BRICS Countries
Which methods and practices do civil activists use in BRICS countries? Why and under what conditions can they be effective? What can Russian civil society learn from civil society in India or Brazil, and vice versa? These issues will be discussed at a conference to be held on May 19 jointly by the HSE Department of Public Policy and Oxfam, an international non-governmental organization. Registration for the seminar is open to Russian and foreign experts, researchers, students and representatives of NGOs.
School of Software Engineering Takes Part in the Creation of Vietnamese-Russian Technological University
The Vietnam-Russia academic conference that took place in Hanoi in April decided to establish a Vietnamese-Russian Technological University (VRTU) on the basis of the Le Quy Don University of Science and Technology. HSE’s School of Software Engineering is to play a key role in this process.
Evgeny Yasin is 81
On May 7th 2015 HSE’s Academic Supervisor Evgeny Yasin celebrated his 81st birthday. There’s hardly a soul in HSE who needs to be told just how much Professor Yasin has done for the university. He isn’t only the initiator of research at HSE. It is thanks to him, and some like-minded people, that the university actually came to life. What began as a university for graduates, has rapidly, and uniquely, become one of the top universities in the country.
Calligraphy Workshop Participants Take a Trip Through Chinese History
‘Calligraphy and painting are two arts that have different names, but are one and the same,’ wrote Chinese art historian Zhang Yanyuan. Participants of the School of Asian Studies’ lecture and workshop ‘The Magic of Chinese Characters and the Secret of Calligraphy,’ which took place at the State Museum of Oriental Art as part of the Open University project, were able to witness this firsthand.

Measuring Well-Being and Happiness
On April 30, the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research sponsored a seminar in St. Petersburg by Associate Researcher Francesco Sarracino on ‘Do people care for a sustainable future? Evidence from happiness data’. Sarracino is an economist at Luxembourg’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) and specializes in social capital, economic growth and well-being; he recently spoke at length with the HSE news service about his research interests, implications of measuring happiness and wellbeing for policymakers, and his experience collaborating with the Higher School of Economics.
