The recently released report entitled, ‘Russian Science in Figures’, compiled by HSE’s Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, details the current state of science funding, the percentage of the population in scientific jobs, and scientific research. HSE’s School of Media Offers English-taught Courses
Last semester, journalism students and international exchange students were able to select two subjects taught in English: American Political Rhetoric and Journalism and International Environment. We decided to learn more about these courses from students and teachers.
HSE’s New Master’s Programme: Training Specialists in Language Policy
The first intake into this new Master’s programme will be in 2018 and its graduates will be able to work in the field of language policy. HSE Science Battles Short-listed for the ‘Silver Archer’ Prize
The winner of the Student Project Contest, the HSE Science Battles, has been short-listed for an award recognizing development in the field of Public Relations, the ‘Silver Archer’ prize. Organizers of the Battles will now fight for the major prize in PR. They’ll be up against the biggest Russian and international communication firms in a show-down that will be open to the public on February 16 at the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
Maarten Janssen Named Honorary Professor of HSE
For nearly a quarter of century, Maarten Janssen, a well-known expert in microeconomics and currently a professor at the University of Vienna, has been working with HSE. A ceremony awarding him the honorary title took place at a meeting of the HSE Academic Council.
International Students Invited to Apply to HSE’s Doctoral Schools
Admissions to tuition-free doctoral studies at HSE open on February 01, 2018. International students can choose from 15 PhD programmes in fields ranging from Mathematics to Art and Design. The programmes are offered at HSE campuses in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod. It is not necessary to speak Russian in order to pursue a PhD at HSE – the thesis can be written in English. Several international students are already pursuing doctoral degrees at HSE and one of them, Keunwon Choi from South Korea, has shared his impressions with us.
New Dissertation Councils Introduced at HSE
From February 1, 2018, new rules will apply to dissertation defense for Candidate of Sciences (PhD) and Doctor of Sciences (DS) degrees. Vadim Radaev, First Vice Rector at HSE, helped us understand what has changed, as well as how it is necessary to prepare for the defense process.

Vera Pozzi, originally from Italy, received her PhD in Philosophy from Università degli Studi di Milano in 2015. She recently started as a post-doc research fellow in the School of Philosophy (Faculty of Humanities), where she is studying contemporary Russian Orthodox thought. Vera spoke with the HSE News Service about her experience at HSE Moscow so far, her research interests, and what she is hoping to accomplish over the coming year.
