Open Olympiad in Informatics for School Students Held with Participation of HSE University
The 18th Open Olympiad in Informatics was held in March at four locations; Moscow, Perm, Lipetsk and Tehran. The Olympiad included an online qualifying round and an on-site final round, which was attended by 435 schoolchildren from many countries, including Russia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, and Germany. The event was co-organised by HSE University.
The competition was organised by the Department of Education and Science of Moscow, MIPT and HSE University together with 1C, Yandex and the Centre for Pedagogical Excellence. The Moscow event was held at the 1C training centre.
The 18th Open Olympiad in Informatics is an intellectual competition of the highest level according to the classification of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. The tasks can compare in complexity to the questions of the final stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Computer Science. The winners of the olympiad can enrol in many leading Russian universities, including HSE University, without the need for entrance tests.
This year, Philipp Gribov, expert at the Centre for Student Olympiads, and Pavel Azarov, Head of the Applicants, Students and Alumni Unit at the Faculty of Computer Science were engaged in organising the event at HSE University.
Fedor Romashov, 2nd-year student of the Bachelor’s Programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science, was responsible for developing the tasks. Staff members from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science Philipp Gribov and Ivan Safonov, as well as students Alexey Mikhnenko, Nikita Lazarev, Artyom Titov, Vsevolod Lepeshov, Evgeny Pakhomov, Artyom Agafonov, Alexander Ponkratov and Viktor Romanenko also worked on the tasks for the olympiad.
Programme students Daniil Shindov and Askar Tsyganov, as well as Alexander Chernov, Head of the HSE Joint Department with Tinkoff, all assisted with technical support for the olympiad.
Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, and Evgeny Sokolov, Head of the Big Data and Information Retrieval School, Academic Supervisor of the Bachelor’s Programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science presented the winners with their awards.

The Open Olympiad in Informatics is one of the most prestigious and challenging computer science olympiads for school students in Russia. This year, HSE Univerity took part in organising this event for the first time. Students and staff of the Faculty of Computer Science developed seven of the eight tasks of the olympiad, and I am sure that in the coming years our students will work on new interesting tasks for schoolchildren, and HSE University will continue to play a key role in organising and developing this event.

Programming & Real Life: Results of the PROD Olympiad
The HSE Cultural Centre recently hosted an awards ceremony for the winners of the PROD Olympiad. This is the first-ever industrial IT-development competition for 9th–11th graders in Russia, organised by HSE University, Tinkoff Bank, and the Central University (Moscow). About 4,000 people from 89 regions of Russia, as well as from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, China, and Turkmenistan, participated in the qualifying stage, with 43 people emerging as eventual winners.

The Bachelor’s in Information Science and Computation Technology (ISCT) at HSE MIEM trains experts in the study and design of advanced computing devices, systems, and networks. Graduates of the programme are sought-after specialists in the fields of software development, computer production and sales, computing department management and more. The programme attracts students from across Russia and further afield. Student of HSE Lyceum Wins Bronze at European Geography Olympiad
The 8th European Geography Olympiad took place in Serbia at the end of June. The results of the competition were announced individually in two age categories: the senior group (16–19 years old) and the junior group (12–15). The Russian team won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. One of the bronze medal winners was Danila Gavrilov, student of the HSE Lyceum.
What You Can Do in Data Science: HSE University Invites Applications for IDAO 2020
The registration for the 3rd International Data Analysis Olympiad (IDAO 2020) organised jointly by the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Yandex, is open until January 21, 2020. The international competition introduces young developers and analysts to current issues in Data Science.
Winners of the II International Economics Olympiad Announced in St. Petersburg
On July 31, the II International Economics Olympiad (IEO) for high school students came to a close in Saint Petersburg. In the team competition, the Brazilian team won the gold medal, while teams from China won silver and bronze. One of Russian teams placed fifth.
Second International Economics Olympiad Opens at HSE University in St. Petersburg
On July 24, the second annual International Economics Olympiad (IEO) for high school students kicked off at HSE University in St. Petersburg. The competition is organized by HSE University with the support of Sberbank. Students from 24 countries will compete over the course of a week. The winners will be able to enroll in any HSE Economics programme in 2020 with a full tuition scholarship.
