‘Our Graduates’ Task Is To Show Themselves as Designers’
In mid-July, HSE Art and Design School hosted the graduate fashion show for the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in the Fashion Design and Fashion Brand Creation pathways. Guests saw 20 collections from young designers, with each of them reflecting on an exciting topic, while creating unusual images from a variety of materials.
Anzor Kankulov, Head of Fashion and Media and Design programmes at the HSE Art and Design School, said that the graduate show features the best works of the undergraduate and postgraduate students. ‘Our graduates’ task is to show themselves as designers, to create their first full-fledged collection consisting of seven looks that reveal the concept and the presence of connections within the collection,’ Anzor Kankulov explained.
He also emphasised that teachers do not force students to work on specific topics, so all the collections are the designers’ personal statements.
‘Recently, students have been thinking more and more about the state of the world. The theme of environmental exploitation often comes up again and again, and they’re contemplating a world from the viewpoint of both ecology and the construction of a visual space that allows young people to find themselves and their connectedness to other people through visual practices. In addition, the themes of physicality, acceptance of oneself, and inclusiveness was very noticeable,’ said Anzor Kankulov.
Daria Lukash, a graduate of the Master’s programme in Fashion Design, said she based her collection on the concept of witch-hunts in the modern world. ‘I drew a parallel showing how people used to be sceptical and fearful of those who were not like them, and how often unusual people, who do not fit into the framework of society, are still rejected by it nowadays. That is why the heroine of my collection is a witch of the 21st century with an iPhone in her hands, who is not afraid to be herself, assert herself, and gather like-minded people around her,’ Daria explains.
She added that work on the collection lasted throughout her entire second year of study. ‘For the first six months, we develop an idea,’ says the designer. ‘We formulate the problem set, and do visual research. And the second half is working on the collection—creating images and forms.’
Maria Mindzaeva, a graduate of the Master’s programme in Fashion Design, presented her collection based on the idea of a person in a state of confusion. ‘The idea is to make things look beat up and crumpled. This is how a person feels in a difficult, challenging environment. It is interesting for me to reflect on this state, and I wanted the collection to look like something destructive, almost broken,’ the author explained.
Diana Lebedeva, a graduate of the Bachelor’s programme in Fashion Design, decided to explore the topic of computerisation in our world. ‘People have become commodities on social media, they are being sold for “likecoins”, they are trying to expose themselves so that their profile can sell,’ she believes. ‘I have always been interested in everything related to modern technology, I wanted to reflect on how it changes our lives. This is something innovative, unknown, what can it lead to?’
