20 Things You Might Not Know About HSE - St. Petersburg
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, HSE’s St Petersburg campus came up with the slogan ‘Time to Make Your Dreams Come True.’
The official part of the celebration drew to a close with a speech by Director of the HSE - St. Petersburg campus, Sergey Kadochnikov. After reading out a congratulatory letter from the Governor of St. Petersburg, Georgy Poltavchenko, he reminded the audience about where the university is headed and what dreams HSE – St. Petersburg has made come true.
The campus in St. Petersburg is 20 years old and a celebration in honour of the anniversary was held last weekend. Here are some interesting facts about HSE – St Petersburg that you may not know, as well as photos of the festivities.
1. The first of the campus buildings, where the administration is still located, was opened in the former Shipbuilding Academy. Before the revolution, the same building was home to the Imperial Philanthropic Society and was a boarding school for girls.
2. Now, the campus has five educational and administrative buildings.
3. The campus started out by offering specialised programmes in economics, management and jurisprudence.
4. The first intake to a Master’s programme was to the Master’s in Sociology. This occurred in 2007. The Master's programme in Economics and Management was launched two years later.
5. Today, the campus offers 11 bachelor's and 15 master's programmes. An additional bachelor's programme in Applied Mathematics and Informatics is soon to be launched.
6. 469 students were enrolled in state-funded places in Bachelor’s programmes in 2018 and a further 901 enrolled in fee-paying places.
7. This year, for the first time, in addition to programmes in the humanities and socio-economics, there was an intake into a bachelor's programme in Design.
8. Two bachelor's programmes offered at the campus – ‘International Business and Management Studies’ and ‘Political Science and World Politics’ – include a track for double degrees in collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
9. There are also double degree Master’s programmes: ‘Applied Economics and Mathematical Methods’ (with LUISS Business School, Rome) and ‘Finance’ (with ESSCA, France).
10. Following a very successful 2018 admissions campaign, the HSE - St. Petersburg campus entered the well-known ‘90s Club’ of Russian universities for the first time - the average USE score of applicants enrolled in their first year was higher than 90.
11. The campus offers a ‘Diploma +’ project, which enables students to participate in professional retraining or advanced training programmes, as well as study more than 15 foreign languages.
12. In 2018, the campus was placed fourth in a ranking of St. Petersburg universities which train future leaders.
13. The St. Petersburg School of Economics and Management at HSE entered the top 10 in the ranking ‘The Most In-Demand Faculties Among Employers’ in 2017. It was the only faculty outside of Moscow to be among the leaders in the ranking.
14. The first graduate students enrolled at HSE - St Petersburg in 2011, and there were only five of them. This year, 40 graduate students will enrol at the campus.
15. In the past twenty years, more than 5700 students have graduated from specialised, undergraduate and graduate programmes at HSE – St Petersburg.
16. 20% of these graduates are working in finance and consulting, 13% in law, 11% in industry and construction, and 10% have continued in academia. The percentage of those who enter the civil service or open their own business is 6% respectively.
17. The HSE dormitories in Zaporozhye Street in St Petersburg came out on top in a Russia-wide competition of student dormitories in 2017.
18. Three international laboratories operate on the St. Petersburg campus. These are: the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research (supervisor Ronald Inglehart from the University of Michigan), the Centre for Market Studies and Spatial Economics (Jacques-François Thisse, Catholic University of Louvain) and the International Laboratory of Game Theory and Decision Making (Herve Moulin, University of Glasgow).
19. Six employees at the St. Petersburg campus are tenured professors at the Higher School of Economics: Daniil Alexandrov, Evgeny Anisimov, Gadis Gadzhiev, Valery Gordin, Valery Lukinsky and Eduard Ponarin.
20. In spring 2018, the St. Petersburg campus established a Board of Trustees. It is headed by Mikhail Oseevsky, President and Chairman of the board of PJSC Rostelecom.

HSE Virtual Tour: Stroll Around the University from the Comfort of Your Home
In June 2021, HSE University and Times Higher Education (THE) held the online Young Universities Summit. It marked the first time the summit was held with support from a Russian university, and the choice of HSE University was no coincidence—it is the only Russian university to be included in THE’s Young University Rankings. Preparations for the forum included the creation of a virtual tour of several HSE buildings. We spoke to Deputy Vice Rector Marina Kozak about the content of the tour and the practical applications of VR technology for the university.
13 Buildings, 3 Atriums, 78,000 Square Meters: HSE’s New Complex at Pokrovka Awaits
On July 25, upon the approval of the Moscow City Construction Supervision and the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow, HSE University’s new Pokrovka complex opened its doors. The complex, located at 11 Pokrovsky Boulevard, is HSE’s largest and most modern Moscow campus. Classes will begin there in September.
By the Mountains: HSE Perm
HSE University is famous for not only its various locations throughout Moscow, but also its regional campuses in three other major Russian cities. We are delighted to tell you about HSE’s second youngest campus in Perm, which is home to over 2,000 students (around 1,450 of them are full-time learners) and 120 teachers, while also offering 13 education programmes. IV Moscow Urban Forum: Catalysts of Growth and Best Practice in Global Cities
On 11-12 December the IV Moscow Urban Forum ‘Drivers of City Development’ took place. The forum, an annual event since 2011, is an international conference on urban design, architecture, economics and strategic city planning.
