HSE Art Gallery Opens Third Exhibition Season
The gallery is celebrating its return from working from home to regular offline life with the recently opened exhibition ‘NOW’. This exhibition displays graduation projects by nine graduates of the programme in Design and Contemporary Art.
The only rule for this exhibition was that there were no limits in the choice of format and complete freedom of creation. Its participants – graduates of the HSE Art and Design School – intentionally decided not to define one general theme for the exhibition. They not only performed the role of artists but also carried out the curatorial and organizational work of the project.
‘When we discussed our ideas for the exhibition, we decided that we are very diverse, and this is our main strength’, said Daniil Dvinskikh, one of the authors, explaining why the young artists decided not to seek help from curators, ‘If we had tried to limit ourselves within the framework of a general curator’s vision, this would have harmed us all. The only thing that unites us is a shared environment, where we have been developing for the last four years. We offer the results of this to our visitors.
Yulia Yusma, Director of HSE Art Gallery, told us how the exhibition’s name came about. She said that HSE Art and Design School has a tradition of giving names to student groups. ‘The students choose the name for their community themselves, and often, sign their team projects with this name. This exhibition has resulted from self-organization of some of our graduates, who were working under the name ‘Now’. Hence, the name of the exhibition, which, at the same time, reflects the main message of their project – to sort out, who they are now, in the moment, just as their studies are over’, said Yulia.
The gallery director also said that they had planned to open the exhibition in May, but the pandemic caused some changes to the plan.
Yulia Yusma, Director of HSE Art Gallery
We are happy that the exhibition has finally opened, despite all the complications. Some projects have even benefited from such a long break: they have risen to a new level of quality and elaboration, while the authors managed to maintain their motivation to participate. It’s hard to imagine a flourishing artistic career without determination and belief in one’s efforts. While studying, there are always external stimuli: exam deadlines, study assignments, and regular feedback from teachers. If an artist is unable to work without an external framework, offers or help, they can be lost in the highly competitive environment of cultural production. It would be naive to expect that everything would come right ‘on its own’, that job offers or a good curator/gallery director would arrive unexpectedly. I’m happy that our graduates understand this and are ready to work hard, to bring their work to a conclusion, and to support each other in the process.
Visitors are welcome to look at the videos, installations, and performances, as well as to compare some impressionist works with the mobile lo-fi photos made by HSE Art and Design School graduates. The exhibition is open until October 11. In order to prevent the spreading of COVID-19, please register in advance.
