Fuad Aleskerov Elected to Academia Europaea

Tenured HSE Professor Fuad Aleskerov, who is the head of the Faculty of Economic Sciences’ Department of Mathematics, has become a member of the Informatics section of the Academia Europaea.

Founded in 1988, the Academia Europaea is split into 21 different sections and includes nearly 3,800 of the world’s leading scholars, of which over 70 are Nobel laureates.

It is no accident Fuad Aleskerov was elected to the Informatics section in particular. The mathematical models he has developed can be applied not only in economics, but also in computer science, public administration, info-metrics, biology, and more. At HSE he teaches courses in five bachelor’s and master’s programmes within three faculties. He is also the head of the International Laboratory of Decision Choice and Analysis.

‘I was never interested in simple problems with ready-made models where you just have to put in data and get a result. It is much more interesting to develop your own methods,’ Professor Aleskerov says in the latest edition of Research at HSE: For School and for Life. ‘Even now, I tell my students that being a scientist is like being a detective: it’s constantly solving riddles – big and small.’

In 2018 Aleskerov published three articles in first-quartile journals – that is, the most prestigious publications in the academic world – as well as several chapters in academic books. This includes a study on possible oil spills and their potential consequences in the Barents Sea. The mathematical model was built that factors in the work of drilling rigs, the direction of sea currents, wind, ice movement, and other aspects. The model identifies the zones with the highest risk of ecological catastrophe and ways to mitigate a disaster. Another study offers a model that allows countries to allocate zones of interest in the Arctic to avoid conflicts.

The official ceremony to welcome the new members to the Academia Europaea took place in Barcelona on November 28 as part of the 30th annual plenary conference.

Other HSE researches have previously been elected to the Informatics section of the Academia Europaea, including Tenured Professor Boris Mirkin and Faculty of Computer Science Professor Nikolay Vereshchagin. Another tenured HSE professor, Oleg Budnitskii, is part of the History and Archaeology section.
