HSE Accepting Works by Students from All Universities for Research Competition

The Higher School of Economics has begun accepting works for its annual Student Research Paper Competition. Applications are due October 15 and can be submitted on the competition’s website.

Papers in Russian and English are eligible.

Works submitted for the competition are reviewed anonymously. The results will be announced in December, and an awards ceremony is set to take place as well.

Several nice changes have been introduced this year. First, there is a new nomination category – education. Second, students from any university can submit a paper on any field. This gives even more young researchers the opportunity to participate in the Student Research Paper Competition.

About the Competition

Applicants can submit a paper in 22 different areas of focus, including business informatics, public administration, integrated communications, art and design, history, computer science, cultural studies, linguistics, mathematics, media communications, management, philology, philosophy, finance, economics, law, global economics, international politics, Asian studies, political science, psychology, sociology, technical science, applied mathematics, and education. Two contests will take place for each category, except for mathematics; the first is for undergraduate students, while the second is for master’s students and 2018 graduates. One large competition will take place in mathematics.

Participants

In order to participate in the competition, you must be an undergraduate or master’s student from any Russian or foreign university. Those graduating this year can also send in their research works. The application and review process takes place on line, so there is no need to travel to Moscow to participate. ‘The Student Research Paper Competition is similar to blind listening,’ notes Sophia Porfirieva, a winner in the philosophy category of last year’s competition. Simply send in your work from any location and wait for the results.

Bonuses

Winners and laureates of the competition will receive a certificate in their portfolio. Students with state scholarships will be given additional points in order to receive a higher scholarship, while those without a state scholarship will be given a discounted tuition rate for an HSE master’s programme.

Additionally, winners will have the opportunity to take part in Russia’s National Student Paper Competition, as well as in various HSE projects aimed at developing students’ academic potential.

Last year, the best participants in the paper competition attended the Academicus Modus Field Research and Education School in Voronovo, Russia for the first time ever. The objective of the school is to foster students’ academic skills and create an intimate atmosphere where new researchers can share their experiences with one another. During the school, students developed group research projects, the best of which received grants to make these projects a reality.

Competition winners will also have the opportunity to join the Chi Sigma Epsilon academic club, the creation of which was announced during the Academicus Modus School. ‘Communication is important in academia, and in order for this communication to happen, platforms have to be created for people to interact,’ HSE Vice Rector Igor Chirikov says.

Less bureaucracy, more research. This has been the Higher School of Economics’ motto for several years now. Now is the time to become part of the university’s academic life. As Sophia Porfirieva correctly concludes: ‘You either win, or everything will remain the same as before.’
