On September 13th 2011 a seminar by the HSE Institute for Educational Studies took place. Martin Carnoy, Professor at the University of Stanford and Academic Supervisor at the HSE International Laboratory for Educational Policy Research, spoke on ‘The Low Achievement Trap: Comparing Schools in Botswana and South Africa’.

On September 7th, HSE students met with Edward Bace, Head of Education for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region of the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Institute. The meeting was organized by the HSE Banking Institute.
‘The Fiscal Crisis In Europe Seems To Be Approaching Its Climax’
From September 15th-17th an international workshop on ‘National Business Cycles in the Global World’ will take place at the HSE. The event has been organized by the HSE together with the Centre for International Research on Economic Tendency Surveys (CIRET) and the Swiss Economic Institute (KOF). Jan-Egbert Sturm, President of CIRET and Director of KOF, told us about the forthcoming workshop and the importance of business cycle studies.

A Handbook of Research on Entrepreneurship Policies in Central and Eastern Europe has been published in the UK. Alexander Chepurenko, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Sociology, is the author of the chapter on 'Entrepreneurship and SME policies in fragile environments: the example of Russia'.
Meeting with Nobel Laureates
From August 23rd-27th a meeting of Nobel laureates in economics took place in Lindau, Germany. This event is traditionally organized once every three years. Henry Penikas, lecturer at the HSE Department of Mathematical Economics and Econometrics and one of the participants at this meeting, told us about the event.
Discovering Entrepreneurship
An international Summer school organized by the HSE Laboratory for Entrepreneurship Research and the Netherlands Institute for Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship (NIKOS) at the University of Twente (Enschede), the Netherlands, was held this August. ‘Changing Europe’ In Moscow
From August 1st – 5th, an international Summer School on East-European studies took place at the Higher School of Economics. This time, participants discussed the influence of the global economic crisis on the politics and economies of Central and Eastern European countries.
Baltic Practice-2011: A New Level Of Research
On August 1st at the Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, the XI International summer research school Baltic Practice began. This is an annual event organized by the HSE Department of Public Policy. Nina Belyaeva, Academic Supervisor of the school and Head of the Department of Public Policy, told us about the schedule of the practice and the new areas of research which are being carried out as part of it.
FP7: In the Framework Beyond the Frames
On July 22nd an information day dedicated to the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for research and technology development took place at the HSE. Anna Pikalova, Director of the HSE International Centre for the Promotion of Mobility of Researchers, Students and Postgraduates, told us about the HSE’s participation in this programme and particularly about the creation of a Russian-European information portal as part of FP7.
