Anthropological Pirouette

For a long time, it was mainly art and theatre critics who wrote for a wide audience about dance from a spectator’s perspective. Later, philosophers and ethnographers began to study dance from different angles. But only when people with first-hand experience, i.e. dancers, joined in, did dance and movement studies get off to a real start. Irina Sirotkina explains how dance studies evolved in the 20th century.

Art for Auction: The Shape of the Russian Art Market

Currently, the Russian art market is made up of more than 20 auction houses, about 100 major galleries, 9 big private collectors, and over 20 thousand professional artists. Though it shows a lot of promise, it still has yet to come into its own. Researchers of the HSE Centre of Development Institute studied the contemporary mechanisms in place for trading paintings, graphic art, photography and sculpture in Russia, and they published their findings in a paper, ‘The Russian Art Market: 2018’.

More Vivid than an Album and Deeper than a Textbook

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) held a roundtable to discuss ‘Russia. The 20th Century’, a book that aims to present contemporary Russia to Western audiences using visual cultural codes and emotional response. Several HSE faculty members took part in the event.

On November 3, Moscow will play host to Art Night. Visitors will be welcomed to theatres, museums, libraries, and higher education institutions. The HSE is also offering its own programme of entertainment — the Art of Dreaming. Here are several reasons why you should make sure you visit the HSE's Art Night.

HSE Becomes Night of the Arts Platform on Night of November 3-4

During Night of the Arts, guests of HSE’s festival took a stroll on Myasnitskaya Street, which was closed to automobiles specially for the event. Myasnitskaya became the location of a large stage for performances by student groups of the university. More than 50 HSE students and friends sang, danced, and read poems for guests of the celebration, and another 50 worked at the event as volunteers.Instructors from the Faculty of Design had a special exposition called ‘The Latest Teacher’s Exhibition.’ HSE students organized workshops in a hall of the university for sand painting, gift box making, and henna painting.
