HSE and Yandex to Expand Collaboration in Training AI Specialists
Over the next ten years, the partnership between Yandex and the HSE Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) will broaden across three key areas: launching new educational programmes, advancing AI research, and exploring the application of generative neural networks in the educational process. Established by HSE University and Yandex a decade ago, the Faculty of Computer Science has since emerged as a frontrunner in training developers and experts in AI and machine learning, with a total of 3,385 graduates from the faculty over this period.
The primary areas of collaboration between HSE University and Yandex encompass education and research in computer science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. This year, with support from Yandex, HSE University will introduce a master's programme in AI in marketing and product, while also incorporating AI as a field of study into the Modern Computer Science master's programme to train specialists in generative technologies and large language models. Additionally, interdisciplinary programmes in IT fields will be developed for social science students.

For a decade, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science has been a source of cutting-edge advancements in IT, training highly skilled specialists. The best of the best enrol in the FCS as students and graduate from it. In 2023, 93 finalists and prize winners of the All-Russian Olympiad of School Students enrolled in the first year of the FCS's Bachelor's, with 73 of them joining the programme in Applied Mathematics and Information Science. Software Engineering has the highest minimum score requirement among all educational programmes at HSE University, standing at 305 points. One of the key objectives for HSE University is to strengthen training in the field of AI. Our students excel in international programming competitions and emerge as sought-after specialists in an industry that requires an in-depth understanding of future technologies. Through collaboration with major players in the artificial intelligence industry such as Yandex, HSE University will foster a new generation of AI experts capable of tackling the most challenging tasks.
The LAMBDA Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis and Yandex Laboratory were created with support from Yandex. The Yandex scholarship is available for young researchers at the FCS, with the company annually supporting up to 16 students engaged in scientific work. A joint doctoral programme in artificial intelligence will open in September. In addition to this, Yandex is one of the industry partners of the HSE AI Research Centre.

Yandex and the HSE FCS were among the first in the country to initiate systematic efforts to advance IT education. Graduates of the faculty are highly sought after, both in the business world and in academia. Over the next few years, Yandex and the FCS plan to substantially broaden their collaboration in IT training. According to our projections, over the next decade, the number of graduates from Yandex programmes at the faculty is expected to quadruple compared to the last decade.
The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, in collaboration with Yandex, has been integrating AI-based tools into the educational process and research. This year, new training courses in working with neural networks will be launched for both students and faculty.
Graduates of the FCS are employed in leading Russian IT companies, engage in R&D, and establish their own start-ups and businesses. Specifically, at Yandex, these graduates work in business groups that develop services such as Search, Market, Taxi, and others. HSE University is a prominent AI research hub, ranking second among Russian universities in terms of the number of publications at A* conferences: between 2015 and 2023, a total of 168 papers were published with FCS affiliation. In the AI Alliance Russia's university ranking, HSE University holds the top position in the A+ leadership group based on criteria including graduates' employability, quality of the educational environment, and initiatives for schools.

Topic models are machine learning algorithms designed to analyse large text collections based on their topics. Scientists at HSE Campus in St Petersburg compared five topic models to determine which ones performed better. Two models, including GLDAW developed by the Laboratory for Social and Cognitive Informatics at HSE Campus in St Petersburg, made the lowest number of errors. The paper has been published in PeerJ Computer Science.
HSE University and Yandex to Host International AI Olympiad for Students
The HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Yandex Education are launching their first joint AI competition, Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis Olympiad (AIDAO), for students from around the world. Participants will tackle challenging tasks in science and industry and interact with experts from HSE and Yandex. The winners will receive cash prizes.
Winners of the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence Admitted to HSE University
In mid-August, Bulgaria hosted the finals of the first International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) among high school students. The Russian team demonstrated excellent results, winning gold medals in the scientific round, silver medals in the practical round, and coming first in both rounds overall. This year two members of the Russian team were accepted into the programmes of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science.

HSE University Leads the AI Alliance Ranking
The AI Alliance Russia has released a new ranking of Russian universities based on the quality of education in the field of AI. Similar to last year, HSE University has joined the leaders in A+ group alongside MIPT and ITMO. A total of 207 universities from 69 Russian regions participated in the ranking. In 2024, over 35,000 students were enrolled in AI-related programmes at these universities.
Reinforcement Learning Enhances Performance of Generative Flow Networks
Scientists at the AI Research Centre and the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science applied classical reinforcement learning algorithms to train generative flow networks (GFlowNets). This enabled significant performance improvements in GFlowNets, which have been employed for three years in tackling the most complex scientific challenges at modelling, hypothesis generation, and experimental design stages. The results of their work achieved a top 5% ranking among publications at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics AISTATS, held on May 2-4, 2024, in Valencia, Spain.
‘I Came Up with the Idea to Create an Application Useful for Practicing Physicians’
Dmitry Ryabtsev, a 2024 graduate of the master's programme at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, created an AI-powered software service for ophthalmology during his two years of study. This product is now entering the market, and its developer plans to participate in establishing a working group on software engineering for medical applications at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, with the goal of promoting more genuinely useful domestic projects. HSE University and Sber Conduct Foresight in Artificial Intelligence
HSE University, in collaboration with Sber, have conducted a foresight study on artificial intelligence (AI). Its early results were discussed by the participants of a strategic foresight session on exploratory research in AI, held at the Coordination Centre of the Russian Government, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko. The results from the foresight study will inform the Unified Research and Development Programme in the Field of AI.
White Papers of AI Conformity Assessment Published on HSE University Website
The Russian Technical Committee for the Standardization of ‘Artificial intelligence’ (TC164), together with the Chamber for Indo Russo Technology Collaboration and the RUSSOFT Non-profit Partnership of Software Developers, has published new White Papers related to Artificial Intelligence Conformity Assessment. It reflects the approaches to the standardization and ethical regulation of AI technologies in two pilot industries — healthcare and agriculture.
Space for Collaboration in Artificial Intelligence
The HSE Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence for Cognitive Sciences (AICS) has launched regular seminars, offering students and scientists from various universities and research centres the opportunity to share their latest research and discuss the most recent developments in artificial intelligence in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.
