‘A Creative Event that Makes Us Happier’

Decemberfest is an annual festival for first-year students, teachers, and applicants of the HSE School of Foreign Languages. The school currently offers courses in nine foreign languages: German, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Turkish, and Hebrew.

The festival is an opportunity for first-years to demonstrate the foreign language skills they have acquired during their studies. This time, the students prepared a magical journey around the globe, during which they performed poetry and music in foreign languages.

Ekaterina Kolesnikova, Head of the School of Foreign Languages

'Decemberfest is a creative event that makes us happier and, most importantly, allows us to learn more about our first-year students, while they get to know each other. It takes the students a few months to adapt at the beginning of the academic year. By December, they have already settled in and feel like a part of our school.'

The first stop on the journey around the world was Turkey. Students in traditional costumes delighted the guests with a Turkish dance. Next up was Germany, where poems by German poets were recited from the stage with translations into Russian. At the Paris station, first-year students performed the song ‘Savez-vous planter les choux?’. In China and Italy, students sang in Chinese and Italian.

Svetlana Bogolepova, Academic Supervisor of the Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication programme, thanked students who contribute to the development of language clubs at the School of Foreign Languages. The school has clubs for Asian languages, French, Italian, Spanish, and German, where all participants have the opportunity to delve deeper into the languages and cultures of various countries.

The hosts of the event were fourth-year students of the Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication programme Alina Missan and Artem Karaban.
