Cultural Cafe Takes Place at HSE
On 4th December the International Students Office at HSE Moscow held the first Cultural Cafe evening, a project to broaden cultural exchange between HSE students from different countries. A similar initative was launched at HSE Nizhny Novgorod earlier this year. It’s all taking place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students from Ghana, Indonesia, China, Nigeria and Uganda made their presentations at the first event and talked about different aspects and traditions of culture in their countries from historical facts to national dishes.

place is where HSE’s English-language website ranked in the Russian International Affairs Council’s (RIAC) list of the best English-language websites of Russian universities. The ranking included 45 different Russian universities.
‘Listen to Your Inner Voice When Choosing Your Life's Path’
Evgenia Kondrashina graduated with honours from the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF) bachelor’s programme in 2005 before going on to receive her master’s from the London School of Economics. An excellent student, Evgenia for a long time thought that the next logical step would be a prestigious career at a top English consulting firm, but the idea of following in others’ footsteps doesn’t make everyone happy. Evgenia deviated from this trajectory and found herself in one of the world’s leading orchestras – the London Symphony Orchestra – where she continues to work today.
'Technology as Such Never Simply Marks Progress'
In his lecture on December 3 at the HSE St Petersburg on 'Progress: A Reconstruction', Professor Peter Wagner (University of Barcelona) raised questions related to the nature of progress and our attitude to it. Professor Wagner is ICREA Research Professor in the Department of Sociological Theory, Philosophy of Law and Methodology of the Social Sciences at the University of Barcelona. He has been cooperating with HSE since 2014. Before his lecture, Editor of HSE English News, Anya Chernyakhovskaya talked to Professor Wagner about the elusive and changing nature of progress.

A mobile app, developed by the HSE School of Linguistics with Samsung and the Leo Tolstoy State Museum won the Runet Prize 2015 in the Mobile Runet category.
'I’m impressed by the mathematical history and general level of mathematical skills here in Moscow'
Bruno Bauwens, an expert in Kolmogorov complexity, is a new recruit at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. He started in September 2015. Bruno received his PhD from Ghent University in Belgium, after which he held postdoctoral fellowships at Porto University (Portugal), as well as at the University of Montpellier and University of Lorraine.
Anatoly Vishnevsky Wins Gaidar Prize
Director of the Institute of Demography, HSE, Tenured Professor Anatoly Vishnevsky was singled out for his outstanding contribution to Russian economic thought. The prize giving ceremony was in Moscow on 12th November.
